1997 - Ballroom
Decorah Iowa's Matter's Ballroom represents one of the few operating and still remaining rural ballrooms in the state.
Opened in 1916 on the farmland of John & Emma Matter, Matter's Ballroom quickly became a dance and entertainment mecca for northeastern Iowa.
During the 30's and 40's all the top named orchestra's played at Matters. From the Hall Leonard Orchestra to the Champagne Music maker Himself, Lawrence Welk, all the "name" attractions of the day made Matter's a regular stop on their itinerary.
Their First rock dance took place in August of 1957, when then owner Leonard Matter brought in Gene Vincent and his Blue Caps, that drew a capacity crowd.
From Buddy Holly & the Crickets, to Conway Twitty, to Iowa's Everly Brothers, to the rockin' sounds of Jerry Lee Lewis, they all knew that the crowds at Matter's would be some of the best.
Today, John and Suzanne Matter run this family owned business and are third generation of the Matter's to operate this historic ballroom in Decorah. In 1996 Matter's celebrated their 80th Anniversary and their 40th Anniversary of bringing rock and roll to northeastern Iowa.
