2009 - Band

Crow formed in Minneapolis, MN in August of 1967. Originally known as the “South 40”, these musicians were former members of the Rave-Ons and the Jokers Wild.

Original band members were: Dave Wagner (vocals), Larry Wiegand (bass-vocals), Dick Wiegand (guitar) Dave “Kink” Middlemist ( Hammond organ-vocals) and Harry Nehls (drums-vocals).

The band released the “South 40 Live at Someplace Else” LP in 1968. In 1969 they added Denny Craswell (from the Castaways) on drums- vocals; and changed their band’s name to Crow. With that came the release of their album “Crow Music” on the Amaret label out of Chicago .

Crow had a number of Top 40 hits from 1969-1972 including “Evil Woman” which sold 800,000 copies), “Slow Down (Don’t Try To Lay No Boogie-Woogie on the King of Rock n’ Roll)” and “Cottage Cheese”, among others. “Evil Woman” reached number 16 on Billboard’s Top 40.

The list of colleges the band played reads like a Who’s Who of Iowa education: Wartburg College at Waverly, Luther College in Decorah, University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa State in Ames, Drake in Des Moines, Waldorf College in Forest City, Upper Iowa in Fayette, the University of Dubuque, University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Morningside College in Sioux City, Coe College of Cedar Rapids and many, many more.

After releasing 15 singles and five LP’s and traveling Iowa extensively, they disbanded in 1972 but formed again in 1988. Crow continues to play concerts all over the and has released numerous CDs. All the members have won Minnesota Music Awards for their own individual instruments. In 2005 Crow was inducted into the Minnesota Rock/County Hall of Fame.

For their influence and impact on Iowa’s music scene, Crow is inducted, as the out of state designee, into the Hall of Fame in 2009.

The Iowa Rock 'n Roll Music Association Hall of Fame & Museum exists to preserve the legacy of rock and roll music in Iowa by honoring achievements, educating youth and inspiring artists. Established in 1997, we are a501(c)(3) non-profit statewide organization with many areas of service.
