KDEC Radio

2014 - Radio Station

KDEC Radio in Decorah actually began operations in 1926 as KCGA. In the 1930s, Luther College began operations. Both stations were on the 1240 frequency and agreed to a time-sharing arrangement. That sharing agreement, perhaps the last of its kind in the USA between commercial and non-commercial entities, continues today, with KDEC broadcasting from 5 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Friday. KWLC, with its own tower, transmitter and studios, is licensed to broadcast from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Monday-Friday, and from 7 a.m.-12:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The current KDEC officially began in 1947, originally a satellite station of KDTH in Dubuque. Shortly after, it was purchased by Vern Koenig and Ken Bjerke.  They owned it until 1985 when they sold the AM to Paul Scott. Scott soon after added KDEC-FM. Scott sold the AM/FM to Bob & Colleen Holtan in 1996.

Ken Bjerke and Vern Koenig were the owners of the station in the early Rock and Roll era of the 50s and 60s. Ken died in 2001. Vern still resides in Decorah.
