KICD Radio

2012 - Spirit Award

KICD AM is part of the Spencer Radio Group that includes CD 107.7 (KICD FM) and Lite 104.9 (KLLT FM). All three stations have long been supporters of live music throughout the region.

In the early years of KICD AM, artists were often invited to perform live in studio.

KICD's Little Theatre at the Clay County fairgrounds became a showcase for local artists, as well as regional and national acts in the 50s. These acts were given an opportunity to perform for fairgoers, and were also carried live over the airwaves.

Over the years KICD, CD 107.7, and Lite 104.9 has continued to offer opportunities for live music.

KICD continues to sponsor music events at the Roof Garden, The Majestic Pavilion, and Preservation Plaza, all in the Iowa Great Lakes Area. These sponsorships include the Colgate Country Showdown, Just 4 Kids Karaoke, the Rock the Roof concerts, as well as summer concerts at Arnolds Park.

For nearly 20 years in the Spencer Area, The Spencer Radio Group has been the annual sponsor of the formerly-known-as Hot Country Nites, but now called Concert Connections at the Clay County Fair. Concert Connections supports the national acts that the Clay County Fair brings to Spencer every year.

The Little Theatre at the Fair is long gone, but has been replaced with the KICD Courtyard Stage which features local talent, including the KICD We've Got Talent Show.

The stations have always been big supporters of local talent from the area and are always happy to support them. Talents like Shannon Brown and Shawn Mayer, who both grew up here in northwest Iowa, went on to achieve national recognition. The stations have conducted numerous interviews and have been a sponsor/supporter of their appearances and concerts in the area when they come back home.

KICD AM is celebrating our 70th Anniversary in 2012, the station signed on the air November 20th, 1942, and was issued the last construction permit granted by the FCC that year following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. KICD FM signed on the air in 1965 and was the first 100,000 watt FM signal west of the Mississippi River. The addition of KLLT FM to the Spencer Radio Group was in 1993, it was a pre existing station when purchased that signed on the air in 1979.

The Sanders Family was the original owner's of the stations, with Ben Sanders starting the stations followed by his son Bill, they owned the KICD stations from 1942 through 1999. The stations are now owned by Saga Communications, who bought the stations in January of 2000.
