2017 - Disc Jockey
Kyle Martin was born into a radio family. His father, Charley Martin, began at KSO radio in the early 60's before moving to Denver Colorado at KHOW radio. The music of the 50's, 60's and 70's became the fabric of his life thanks to his father.
In 1985 Kyle enrolled in Drake University's school of Journalism and Mass Communication. While at Drake he began working at KIOA 940 radio in Des Moines with Dic Youngs. Taking a full load of classes and working overnights at KIOA was quite a challenge.
He graduated from Drake in 1989. In October of 1990, KIOA began broadcasting on the FM dial with an all new lineup that included Dic Youngs, Max Schaffer and Kyle. While at KIOA he had many opportunities to emcee concerts at the Val Air Ballroom, Des Moines Convention Center and Iowa state fair grandstand. Including concerts by the Shirelles, Lou Christie, Temptations and the Beach Boys.
In 1993, Kyle moved to afternoons at top 40 KCCQ in Ames. He continued there until 1995 where he moved to mornings/program director at a new music station in Grinnell/Newton called KRTI. In 1997, an oldies/classic rock format called Kyle back to Ames at a brand new station called KLRX(Clear 96.1). In 2001 an opportunity to return to an all oldies format at KBIZ in Ottumwa was a fun opportunity. Eventually KBIZ switched to a news/talk format. News Talk was an easy adaptation for Kyle. Although he wasn't playing music, it gave him an opportunity to interview 1960's musicians and authors.
In 2004 Kyle moved to one of Iowa's original radio stations, KFJB, Marshalltown. KFJB went on the air in 1923. He assumed mornings and program duties at another news/talk format. This format again enabled him to interview multiple iconic musicians. Some of the memorable interviews include Randy Meisner (The Eagles), Pete Best (The Beatles), Roger McGuinn (The Byrds), Jerry Allison (The Crickets), Don Felder (The Eagles), Bobby Vee, Dean Torrence (Jan & Dean), Ron Dante (The Archies), Nancy Wilson(Heart), Burton Cummings (The Guess Who), David Crosby (Crosby, Stills & Nash) Peter Cetera(Chicago), Tommy James, Steve Howe(of YES), Carl Palmer(Emerson, Lake & Palmer) and Christopher Cross.
In addition to all of his work in radio as a DJ, Talk Show Host, Interviewer, and Program Manager, Kyle has emceed countless concerts all over the state and continually promoted rock and roll throughout his 30 years in Iowa radio.
