Larry Lee

2010 - Individual Arist

Larry Lee was born in 1951 in Council Bluffs .  He began his musical career in his hometown in 1964 as the bass player in a band called The Ladds.  This was a typical local rock band that Larry had put together with some of his friends.

In late 1966 Larry put together a band called ‘Peach and Lee’ with his friend Arlis Peach.  Larry and Arlis joined up with Leon Russell and Dewey Martin from Buffalo Springfield and this band was eventually signed by RCA Music in 1968.  This band played nationally until late 1971 and then Larry carried on as a solo artist through the balance of the 1970’s. During this time as well, he also played with Mick Ronson from David Bowie’s group.

In the early 1980’s he signed a record deal with EMI, fronting the band The Scooters.  He spent most of his time in England recording two albums with producer Phil Wainman (Boom Town Rats, XTC, Bay City Rollers) learning his producer chops and touring with The Pretenders.  He also took some time in the early 1980’s to join and tour with Badfinger. At about this same time, he was approached by MGM pictures to write, score and produce all the music for the film “Dutch Treat” and to work with The Dolly Dots. He ended up staying in Holland for one and one-half years producing Nadieh, Novo Band, Blizz and The Walkman.

In the 1990’s and early 2000’s as a musician and producer Larry worked with such artists as Meatloaf, Mr. Big, Roger Daltry of The Who as well as numerous projects (Flashdance, Metropolis, Navy Seals) with composer and three-time Oscar-winner Giorgio Moroder.  From 2007 to 2009 Larry has been the President/Head of A&R along with partner Richie Zito VP of A&R of YMA Records/The YMA Music Group, which is a full service entertainment company. YMA had extensive marketing, promotion and production resource departments enjoyed by major labels, but with an artist oriented/independent mentality.

Larry has recently announced the formation of a new venture that he and a number of his music industry friends have established.  HOR Entertainment Group will be a full service entertainment company including HOR Records, HOR Publishing, HOR Film and Television and HOR Merchandise. Larry has been in the music business for over 42 years and is still going strong: recording, promoting, producing, playing and helping to keep music alive in every way possible.  For his numerous musical ventures and his contributions to the music industry as a whole, we proudly induct Larry Lee into the Iowa Rock n Roll Music Association’s Hall of Fame with the Class of 2010.

The Iowa Rock 'n Roll Music Association Hall of Fame & Museum exists to preserve the legacy of rock and roll music in Iowa by honoring achievements, educating youth and inspiring artists. Established in 1997, we are a501(c)(3) non-profit statewide organization with many areas of service.
