Peter McClain, Dic Youngs, & KIOA Radio

1997 - Radio Station

Name a youth who during the '60s and '70s didn't turn their radio dial to AM radio KIOA in Des Moines for their daily fix of rock music. The call letters of KIOA is synonymous with rock & roll in the state of Iowa.

All the listeners that grew up with KIOA have had the rare opportunity to see the station keep the same format all these years, the rock sound of the '50s, '60s, and '70s.

The station played a big part in the development of the "Iowa Sound" as they would regularly play Iowa based bands records and many times put those very records into their Top 40 rotation.

It was not common to see a significant midwest radio station get behind the "local sound" the way KIOA did, but it made this station a standout from the others and established it as "the station" to listen to for rock and roll in Iowa.

In addition to the Hall of Fames recognition of KIOA, they are pleased to also recognize two of the most legendary voices in KIOA history.  Representing the "KIOA Good Guys" from the '60s Peter McClain and the '70s, '80s and '90s Dic "The Ole Youngster" Youngs. Congratulations to this most deserving trio.
