2015 - Venues/Ballrooms
The Riviera Ballroom opened in Janesville in January of 1951 and immediately became the place to be for fun and music.
In the 35 years of its existence, the ballroom hosted countless wedding and anniversary celebrations, high school proms and banquets.
Nationally known big bands came to play the Riviera. Jan Garber, Louis Armstrong and Lawrence Welk were among the notables to grace the Riviera stage. Later Iowa rock and roll bands had the honor of playing that same stage. No matter who was on stage, people came from miles around to be entertained.
Though the Riviera Ballroom closed in 1986, its spirit lives on in the community of Janesville and in the Janesville Riviera-Roose Community Center that now sits on the land occupied by the Riviera. When there is an event at the community center, it’s a part of the old ballroom sign that signals to all that the bar is open.
For years of providing a stage and audience for music and countless fine musicians, The Riviera Ballroom at Janesville is inducted into the IRRMA Hall of Fame with The Class of 2015.
