Shane Von Holdt

2012 - Individual Artist

Shane acquired his passion for music after watching his uncle, Wayne Hoffman play guitar with his band. The group included IRRMA Hall of Famers Mark Gentry and Steve Lutz (Sticks & Stones, HOF 2011). His Uncle Wayne's 1963 Stratocaster is the very same one Shane played from age eight until the time he switched to bass. He still owns it today.

His first job was at age 12 when he played with his sister Teresa at the Narrows in Francis Sites. They were paid $3.00 and two hamburger baskets. Shane was in his first band at age 14. It consisted of Bob Gamble, Jim Dake and Jay Shupe. He continued to play with several area musicians in the Iowa Great Lakes Region and southern Minnesota throughout his teens.

In 1978 Shane was still playing with Bob Gamble. They teamed up with Scott Griffiths and Larry Heins to form the Green Valley Band. They were based out of Spencer until 1981. Shane moved to Florida for a year and performed in the Jacksonville area before returning to Iowa. In 1983 to 1985 he worked in the Joe Schultz Band.

When Joe retired Shane joined the other members of the band, Al Bjerke, Max Cote and Tom "Zeeth" Klugherz of the Gestures to form the Slim Side Band. They played Iowa and Minnesota from 1985 to 1992 when he took a brief break from music. During his hiatus, he happened to listen to the band Magnum play. He liked what he heard and at the end of the evening was approached by John Senn to join the band. Magnum's current bass player was leaving the area, so Shane was given the choice to play guitar or bass,. Shane chose bass and began playing with Magnum in 1993.

Throughout the 90's and up until 2006 Shane played with John Senn in various musical endeavors as well as a stint with Steve Streit and Daybreak.

The last full-time band Shane was in was certainly one of the most enjoyable. Mosquito Flats consisted of Shane, Bob York, John Senn and Al Klein, all HOF inductees. They played together until the band broke up in 2006.

Since 2006, Shane has been active with Hall of Fame events, Rock the Roof nights with the IRRMA Allstars and filling in with many bands needing a bassist for a night or more. Among them are Starfire, The Magnificent Board of Directors and The Lake Patrol Band. Other musicians Shane has had the pleasure to work with are Barbara Lewis, Freddie Weller, Denny Yost, and James Freeman.

Shane Von Holdt has enjoyed his life of music and working with many talented musicians along the way. He plans to continue this for many years to come.

The Iowa Rock 'N Roll Music Association welcomes Shane von Holdt into its 2012 Hall of Fame.
