The Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association is working to provide opportunities for Northwest Iowa youth to find their voice. Teen Music Association was created to engage 7th through 12th grade students in socially acceptable means of self-expression. “We are basically producing free music based activities for students to offer them opportunities for development through the arts outside of school. We want youth to develop a lifelong appreciation of music and be able to learn how to express themselves appropriately,” said Cindy Stanbro, Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association’s Executive Director, “and involvement in music does just that.”
This partnership with Pearson Lakes Art Center is new and growing quickly. Working with Ms. Duffy at Spirit Lake High School and Mr. Lambert at Okoboji Middle School, Mrs. Stanbro introduced the concept to students and asked for committee volunteers by going into classrooms and talking about the project. About twelve students have been a part of planning the monthly events at the Pearson Lakes Art Center which kick off Saturday, January 20th with a free Glow Dance from 7-9 pm.
“Northwest Bank stepped up as a sponsor which allowed us to be able to hire a DJ and Spirit Lake Hy-Vee is graciously donating food and drinks for the event. Rob Caitlin will be DJing, the dance floor will be black lighted, and the first 100 students will receive a glow item,” said Cindy Stanbro. Students are encouraged to wear glow and neon clothing to participate in the dance’s glow theme.
Upcoming Teen Music Association events include watching a musical in February, helping produce Iowa Rocks Talent music competition in March, and live band karaoke in April.
