Taylor Mills

2015 - Women Who Rock

Taylor Mills was born and raised in Des Moines. She loved music and developed her taste for melody as a child.

Her listening leaned toward pop and R&B, from the Carpenters to Roberta Flack; singers who tempered technique with personal shades of soul. Her love affair with music continued all through her young years. Immediately upon graduation from high school she entered and won the Bill Riley Talent Search at the Iowa State Fair.

Mills met Keith Brown who gave the young singer her first professional experience with session work. She credits Brown with guiding her to find her own voice in the recording studio.

After taking every job she could while constantly working on her skills, Taylor moved to Chicago in 1993. This led to her working with popular bands such as The Gentlemen of Leisure, Ken Arlen Orchestra and Atlantic recording artist Steve Cole.

Through Cole, Mills met her future husband, Styx drummer Todd Sucherman. In 1999, the couple did Brian Wilson’s first ever solo tour.

She spent 12 years as part of Brian Wilson’s band, called by Sir Paul McCartney, “The best touring band in the world. Period.” Mills appeared on several of Wilson’s releases including the Grammy-winning “Smile” and performed at memorable shows such as Live 8, Glastonbury Festival, the Queen’s Jubilee at Buckingham Palace, the Sydney Opera House and 20 nights at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

Through her years of recording and touring, Mills has shared the stage with musical giants such as Jeff Beck, Paul Simon, Neil Young, Sir Paul, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, John Legend, David Crosby, Elton John, Roger Daltrey, Dave Matthews, Vince Gill, Michael McDonald, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Sting and many more.

In between world tours, Mills released two solo records “Lullagoodbye” (2007) which featured appearance by Brian Wilson and Tommy Shaw from Styx and “Under the Surface” (2009), both to critical acclaim. Taylor continues to perform and do session work, but the touring life has ceased for now.  Mills and Sucherman welcomed their daughter, Teagan Everly, in 2014.

For her stellar career and magnificent musical talent, Taylor Mills joins the IRRMA Hall of Fame Class of 2015 as in individual performer.

Honoring achievements, educating youth, and inspiring artists.
